Revisited Review: Zong, The Fort Strip, Makati Philippines

For some casual Chinese eating, our place of choice is Zong. They're located at The Fort Strip alongside our favorite pizza place & the worst Racks branch. Since this wasn't our first visit, we already had our staple must-haves.

Hot & Sour Soup (Php 178)
I'm happy to say that Zong consistently gives out yummy hot & sour soup. Have them split this since serving is enough for 2 people.

Fried Fish Golden Egg (Php 448)
Salted egg dishes seems to be our go-to comfort food. This Zong dish is egg-y & salty in a good way. Lightly coated & fried for the crunch factor while the fish fillet inside stays soft & flaky.

Lemon Chicken (Php 328)
The chicken fillet is packed with lemony goodness with just the right amount of crunch. Food-Stars verdict? This is one of Zong's solid good-tasting dish.

Deep Fried Salt Pepper Pork Ribs (Php 368)
The perfect "pulutan", this pork rib dish is best eaten with a beer in hand. Food-Stars Recommendation? Dip it in vinegar and you're all set.

Braised Beef Tapa (Php 388)
It may not look like much & Zong sometimes overcooks it, but when they do cook it right, you get to bite into tender juicy yummy beef.

And for the new dishes we had....
Hotpot Fish Fillet & Tofu (Php 448)
Tofu is soft as well as the mushrooms & fish fillet. Food-Stars Verdict? Not bad.

Steamed Vegetable Roll (Php 388)
Something healthy for a change. ;)
The brown sticky sauce is a perfect complement to the fresh greens, carrots & chorizo. Surprisingly, I found myself enjoying this dish.

And to end on a sweet note, we got 2 of their dessert offerings.

Banana Fritters with Honey Glaze (Php 128)

What makes this different from your typical turon is they fry the banana before wrapping it & frying it again. The chocolate drizzle was a nice touch. ;)

Mango Sago Cream (Php 128)
Traditional Chinese eating calls for Mango Sago for dessert. This bowl of cold mango cream, mango chunks & tapioca balls is always a lovely treat. ;)

Flavored Katsu at Kimukatsu, Century City Mall, Makati Philippines

For tonight, our dinner plan was to try new food in a new place and the newly opened Century City Mall seemed to offer exactly that. Heard about Kimukatsu and their famous 25-layers of pork cutlet & we couldn't wait to put it to test.

Kimukatsu, Century City Mall
Smile! This Japanese statue greets you at the door then you'll be led inside a hallway to their inner dining area.

Love the gold & black motiff.

Time to grind your sesame seeds! ;)

Tonkatsu Meal Set comes with unlimited rice, soup, cabbage & pickles.

Here's a photo of their cabbage. Crisp, white shredded cabbage that you get to top with 2 types of dressing (goma or vinaigrette).

Their soup comes in two variants, red & bean-y or white & creamy. I personally prefer the red one; it retains the traditional Japanese miso soup flavor.

Potato Salad (Php 130)
While waiting for our sets, we got 2 orders of their Potato Salad. The first spoonful takes your tongue to a journey of bacon goodness. Yes, their potato salad is packed with yummy bacon flavor which makes this my favorite potato salad to date! ;)

And now for the Kimukatsu Sets we had that night...

Black Pepper (Php 390)
For something totally different, we got their Black Pepper flavor. It was just as advertised, you can taste the strong peppery flavor in every bite.

Garlic (Php 380)
I was actually surprised to find myself liking this flavor. Thumbs up to Kimukatsu for taking my taste buds on a new & exciting journey.

Cheese Set (Php 390)
I'm sure it comes as no surprise that this was our favorite. The familiar saltiness of the oozing melted cheese in the tonkatsu is a surefire formula; definitely worth coming back for.

Yuzu Kosho (Php 430)
And last but not the least, we got their must-try flavor. The taste greatly resembled wasabi. Food-Stars Verdict? If you're looking for something different, order this one.

Is there really a difference between the 25-layers mille-feuille and those single-layered ones? Honestly, there is albeit a small one. Since Kimukatsu offers flavored ones, their layers on layers of thinly sliced pork worked nicely. Kimkatsu does a good job with their Katsu; crunchy on the outside yet still juicy on the inside.

Are we coming back? Yup, most definitely! ;)

Thanks for the fast & friendly service!

Revisited Review: Kanin Club, Ayala Triangle Gardens Makati, Philippines

Sometimes when you just can't decide where to eat, the best choice would be a place you've gone to before. For this particular day, we took our own advice & had dinner at one of our comfort food stops.

Kanin Club, Ayala Triangle Garden
And even before they handed us the menus, I knew that their Crispy Liempo will make its appearance. ;)

Crispy Liempo (Php 160)
This crackling crispy thinly sliced liempo by Kanin Club is terribly addicting; my self control always flies out the window with this dish. Food-Stars Verdict? Still as good as I remembered.

Aligue Rice (Php 170)
It won't be a party without Aligue ;) Another sinful concoction by Kanin Club. After this visit, I'm happy to say that this fragrant flavorful bowl of yellow rice is still one of my favorites. ;)

Lemon Chicken (Php 250)
This dish on the other hand was a bit of a disappointment. It's always "the fresher, the better" in this case, they used real lemons. Sadly, it didn't help to bring out the flavor. I'm thinking changing the sauce recipe would be a huge improvement. The breading also needs tweaking.

Tapa (Php 210)
In our last visit, we rated this as an okay dish. On this visit, it's still an okay dish. Nothing special about it.

Kanin Club's Crispy Liempo & Aligue Rice will always be a part of my comfort food list. ;)

Sherlock Night at Mystery Manila, Libis Quezon City, Philippines

It's been a long time since I've managed to post something I'm so excited about. I'll have to be honest, the first time I heard about it, I couldn't quite get how on earth people trapped in a room for an hour would have so much fun.

Welcome to Mystery Manila; one of the first escape room concept here in the Philippines. With 3 rooms to choose from their Libis branch, we signed up for #JusticeForJamila. Here you get to be a private investigator hired to deduce who the murder suspect is.

After having them play back the answering machine message (just enough to memorize it by heart), our team was ready to go. Food-Stars Tip? Keep on looking!! ;)

Here's the Mystery Manila Leaderboard where the fastest mystery-solver teams get to be etched in history with a free shirt to boot! For teams who solve it in 45 mins or less, you get a pen. For those who finish it before the 1-hour limit is up (that's us!), you get stickers ;)

Loved reading their post-it wall! Some of the funniest I've read "Friends pa din kami!" & "Pumasok ng married, came out single na!". I could totally relate! This was sixty minutes of heart pumping, nerve wracking, adrenalin high & "nandyan lang pala" moments that I'll never forget. Thanks Mystery Manila for a truly fun night! ;)

Don't forget to take a photo with their brag-worthy "Mystery Solved" placard or the dreaded "Mystery Fail" one. ;)

** I'm happy to announce that they'll be launching new rooms at their Libis branch this October so book now & get #JusticeForJamila or escape #TheChainedChamber before they're gone! **

Other Mystery Manila Rooms we tried:
Rebecca's Room
World of Wizardry
Buried Bodies
Reversed Reality
Sinister Sensorium
