#FoodStarsAtLittleTokyo: Izakaya Kikufuji, Makati City, Philippines

Our first foray to one of Little Tokyo's hidden gems was truly a memorable experience; we discovered the yummiest wagyu cubes in Makati. Well, I'm happy to say that Little Tokyo is batting 2-0 with our recent visit to Izakaya Kikufuji.

With Kimono-clad waitresses and the no-shoes-policy strictly implemented when seated at their group tables, Izakaya Kikufuji does try to make it as authentically Japanese as possible.

Their menu gets kinda intimidating but don't worry, just ask for their simplified one.

Lunch time at Izakaya Kikufuji is no small feat.  Due to their popular lunch time promo (wherein their main dishes comes with free salad, appetizer, soup & rice), it's no surprise that it's always a full house come 12nn.

Lunch Freebies
Before moving on to our dishes, I would just like to give special attention to their yummy appetizer. The spicy tuna with crunchy bits on top alone makes this lunch a winner in my book. It's just that darn tasty.

Now, let's move on to our main dishes...

Sashimi Large with Freebies
Sashimi Large (Php 560)
Craving for fresh sashimi, we ordered this from their menu. You get to customize the plate to your liking by choosing 5 kinds of sashimi from their selection. We got 2 orders of Salmon, Uni, Unagi & since the Hamachi was out of stock, we went for Mackerel instead. Food-Stars Verdict? Loved everything on this plate except for the Mackerel. Both the Salmon & the Uni was as fresh as can be; they literally just melts in your mouth. As for the Unagi...

... because they weren't stingy with their serving sizes, I was even able to eat it with rice :)

Gindara with Freebies
Gindara (Php 395)
This actually looked as far away from a Gindara dish as possible. Instead of the usual svelte cut of fish, what came out was a HUGE block. I'll be honest, it was intimidating. Food-Stars Verdict? I was expecting it to be as hard as a rock but fortunately it wasn't. It was flaky & soft on the inside. The teriyaki sauce was not bad either. For the price tag, it was okay.

Gyukushi (Php 125/stick)
And now for the famous Gyukushi sticks. Hailed as the "beef sticks as tasty as Seryna's with a lighter price tag", we knew we had to try this for ourselves. Food-Stars Verdict? To be fair, it is waaaay cheaper but I have to be honest, it doesn't taste anything like Seryna's. Maybe without this kind of expectation, it would've gotten a higher rating from me. Too beefy & too much char from the charcoal that on our next visit, one stick each is more than enough.

Ebi Tempura (Php 205)
From the food high courtesy of the fresh sashimi, we experienced our low when we saw their Ebi Tempura. Food-Stars Verdict? You can do without ordering this dish. It wasn't because it was bad but more of it was just okay. For the price though, it is pretty cheap.

We were nursing super full tummies by the end of this meal.

Are we coming back? Yes. Izakaya Kikufuji's fresh Sashimi & Spicy Tuna is worth coming back for:p
