I've always said that good food is best enjoyed with good company.
For this evening, it was early dinner with Krystle at Ooma Japanese Rice Bar.
Arrived at SM Megamall Fashion Hall with 15mins to spare. They accept reservations until 6:30pm only; beyond that & they'll only place you in the priority list. With that strict of a policy, I was surprised to see a lot of empty seats when we arrived.
Hunger pangs started to show at around 7:15 so we ordered while waiting for Krystle to arrive.
Torched scallop + Tuna + Cucumber + Sesame Seeds + Nori Crumbs + Scallion + Teriyaki Sauce + Spicy Mayo + Kimchi Aioli
Okay before we get into this dish, I need to show you how best to enjoy it.
Yup, you get to play with your food before eating! ;) Instead of dipping your maki, you paint it with soy sauce. Cute right? Now let's get into the taste. Presentation-wise, you can see for yourself that it's Instagram worthy. As for the taste, well that's another thing. Wasn't able to taste the scallop & the nori crumbs and scallions didn't really do much to help.
By this time, Krystle arrived.
Crispy Prawn Tempura + Avocado + Tobiko + Aligue Mayo
First time to try sushi that's partly cooked and liked it. The crispiness of the tempura worked really well with the cool avocado and yummy aligue mayo. Food-Stars Verdict? Liked this better than our other maki selection. No need to paint it with the soy sauce.
Gratinated mozzarella and cheddar cheese + Scallion + Togarashi + Unagi Sauce
I was expecting something special; with flavors bursting in every bite but alas was sorely disappointed. Food-Stars Verdict? This didn't taste like any of the gyozas we've had before... which in this case was not a good thing.
Here's something purely Ooma, order any dish from their Hot Plates section & everyone on your table gets unlimited rice.
Don't be shy to ask for refills, they always serve it with a smile.
Sous-vide Hanging Tender + Sauteed Mushrooms + White Truffle Oil + Sweet Potato Mash + Crispy Baby Potato + Pickle Dressing + Ponzu Butter
One of the highlights of the night, Ooma's Hanger Steak was juicy & tasty. The sweet potato mash underneath was a nice surprise. Serving is for 2-3 people and with the unlimited rice offer, it doesn't take much to get full quickly.
Ebi + Aonori + Tempura Mayo + Aligue Mayo + Avocado Mousse
I'll start off by saying that two things make Ooma's Ebi Tempura different from other restaurants. One is the quantity; instead of the usual 6 here they serve 7 pieces. Second is the fact that instead of frying the tail part, Ooma opts to use the head of the shrimp. This made the Ebi tastier & crunchier. Thumbs up for this Ooma! ;)
We finished at around 8:30pm with happy tummies.
Food-Stars Verdict? Ooma Japanese Rice Bar is a nice option for group eating. The unlimited rice option for any Hot Plate order makes sure that everyone leaves the place with a full tummy. Food-Stars Recommendation? Get the Hanger Steak & Ebi Tempura.
