"Pay What You Want", 4 words that was foreign to any establishment that wishes to turn a profit . Can you imagine leaving the power of pricing to the consumers??? Well, this new food hub by Chef Todd English was brave enough to do just that.
Welcome to Pound.
This unique promo ran from Feb 5-10, 2016. Mechanics were as follows:
Let me start off by saying that Todd English Food Hall in SM Aura is one of our yummy discoveries. We have our faves that we keep coming back for. Also, a restaurant that highlights burgers & brioche buns? We're so in!
February 9 2016 at 10:15am, there was already a line snaking around the entrance of Pound. The signing in process started at around 10:50am and by that time, a lot of people were already cutting the line. Sigh.
The industrial design that starts from the tunnel entrance continues on inside. The white brick walls & the open kitchen with exposed stainless equipment were a nice touch.
Ask to be seated in the inner section of the restaurant for more privacy. Plush dark brown couches leaning against the walls & large mirrors creates a mood that spells casual yet classy. The sound system blaring out tunes from the 90's completes the nostalgia. That pretty much kept us occupied & had us singing along while waiting for our food. ;)
Todd English Poutine (PHp 180) |
Fresh cut fries with homemade gravy, caramelized onion, cheese and ground beef served in a cast iron skillet. The soggy fries were a sure sign that Pound uses real potatoes, none of the instant stuff. The homemade gravy on the other hand was both limp in color & flavor. It seemed that it didn't get the chance to set. The cheese was almost non-existent, I was expecting melted cheese on top. The ground beef was seasoned okay. Food-Stars Verdict? Needs more work.
And the hashtags kept on coming! When we asked for plates, they gave us hollowed out wooden boxes. Cute but makes eating harder than usual.
And now for the piece-de-resistance...
T.E. Crispy Chicken Burger (Php 225) |
Crispy Chicken Fillet with T.E. Sweet Spice, Crispy Pickled Slaw, Cilantro Aioli in a Brioche Bun.
It's all about the first bite and this had Asian flavors written all over it. The crunchy slaw added texture to the dish. Food-Stars Verdict? Overall an okay dish but halfway thru, I got tired of the taste. It was good but a bit nakakasawa.
Amsterdam (Php 280) |
House Ground Beef Patty with Fried Onion, Gruyere, Pastrami, Sauerkraut, Mustard Relish, T.E. Sauce in a Brioche Bun.
We couldn't leave Pound without having a taste of their beefy burgers. This looked like the fully loaded version of the T.E. Burger. Tasty beef juices dribbling down the corners of your mouth is always a good thing & Pound's Amsterdam promises just that. Food-Stars Verdict? The well-seasoned beef was clearly the highlight here. As for the other components, more mustard relish & gruyere cheese would totally make this jump from good to great.
More than the pay-what-you-want promo, what made me like Pound more was their attitude when the bill came out. There was none of the awkwardness that usually comes with availing promos; they kept it light & professional all the time.
Will we be coming back? Yes, another Amsterdam please ;)
