Xiao Long Bao Fever at Din Tai Fung, SM Megamall Fashion Hall, Mandaluyong City, Philippines

Xiao Long Bao has been the dim sum favorite that's been hogging the spotlight for months now thanks to the arrival of the Taiwan Michelin-starred restaurant. We all know who I'm talking about but for those who don't here's a hint...

This cute, be-dimpled, apron wearing Xiao Long Bao is the famous statuette of (you guessed it) Din Tai Fung!

Scared of the long lines, we went early. We arrived at the front of the house around 5:40pm & was able to sit at 5:42pm. So for those planning to eat here, it pays to come earlier than the dinner crowd.

This isn't our first time to try Din Tai Fung. On one of our visits to Singapore, we were able to taste their Pork Chop Fried Rice which eventually became Hubby's favorite. I didn't share his enthusiasm since I favored their Shrimp Fried Rice.

Much like in the other Michelin-starred restaurant, they have a checklist of their menu for easier ordering. Not familiar with their dishes? Don't worry since they provide menus with pictures for reference. Here's a snapshot of our orders. They scratch off each item as the dish arrives at your table & as you can see the first ones out was their Xiao Long Bao.

Pork Xiao Long Bao 10pcs (Php 315)
This steamed, soupy dumplings proved to be as yummy as it looked. Some people suggest you bite off a little bit of the top (teat), sip the soup and then slice the dumpling for easier eating. But Hubby & I beg to differ. Here's how we enjoy our Xiao Long Bao.

Pick up one XLB with your chopsticks....

Dip it in the ginger sauce (which our helpful server made for us)...

Place it on your Chinese spoon...

Spoon in more of the ginger sauce, add a few of the ginger slivers if you like then pop that whole thing in your mouth. I know it doesn't sound classy but trust me, you'll be converts by the end of the meal. As you bite into the dumpling, the hot tasty soup fills your mouth with yummy flavors. Add the seasoned ground pork and it's dumpling heaven. Food-Stars Verdict? Din Tai Fung made sure that my love for Xiao Long Bao continued. I do have a bit of an issue with the ginger sauce, it was milder than expected. The ratio seemed a bit off.

The service here is fast & efficient; it didn't take too long for all our orders to arrive hence the pretty table shot.

Crispy Beef (Php 235)
First up is their Crispy Beef which I'm saying right off the bat, I loved. This reminded me of the beef dish served in sizzling plates in Chinese restaurants. They got the sweet & sticky yummy flavors down pat then made it even better by slicing the beef thinly & then frying it 'til crunchy. Food-Stars Verdict? This is worth coming back for.

Sweet & Sour Pork (Php 245)
Another order staple of ours is Sweet & Sour Pork. Din Tai Fung serves it crunchy, just the way we like it. The flavors on the other hand could be better.

Crispy Shrimp Wonton (Php 165)
I'm not sure if the problem is with the wonton or the sauce that comes with it; we didn't like this. This is actually surprising given the fact that crispy shrimp anything is one of our favs.

Shrimp Fried Rice (Php 210)
And finally we get to their Shrimp Fried Rice; I couldn't wait to taste this yummy dish again. My first spoonful was kinda bland so I added a piece of shrimp for my second one... It was still bland and unfortunately this carried on all throughout the dish. Sigh. Food-Stars Verdict? Weak flavors & the very few pieces of shrimps were a far cry from their Singapore counterpart :(

Which was sad news because we already ordered one for take out for the in laws..... :(

Are we coming back? Yes but we'll stick with the staples namely the Xiao Long Bao & Crispy Beef.
