Casual Filipino Eats at Isla Una, Pasig City, Philippines

Since we've always made it a point to choose places to try within the confines of Makati area (less travel = less traffic); whenever we do venture out, it's always with an excited air of anticipation. It was no different when Isla Una came into play.

We looked through their menu and chose one dish from different menu categories namely Baboy (Pork), Baka (Beef) and Manok (Chicken).

First up is the Sizzling Sisig (Php 225). For me, sisig should be crunchy or at least have a defined texture that's right in the middle of chewy but not tough/overcooked. Isla Una's version wasn't bad but it wasn't memorable either; average at best. Squeezing in more calamansi and mixing in more soy sauce and hot sauce did not help.

Next is the Sizzling Bulalo (Php 490). Now this I got really on board for. Filipino flavors all in one bite. Tender beef shanks swimming in the creamy mushroom gravy. We were mopping up the sauce too quickly that we had to sheepishly ask for a bit more, which the waiter gladly obliged to. The only downside is the serving size is a bit small for the price tag; it left us wanting more.

The first thing I look out for when eating grilled chicken is no pink/red spots when slicing into the meat; Isla Una's version passed with flying colors (excuse the pun). Their Chicken Inasal (Php 160) was grilled just right; a bit crunchy on the outside (courtesy of the grill marks) while moist and tender on the inside. Squeeze in the calamansi to bring out the herby and nutty flavors of the lemongrass-annatto oil marinade.

After this first visit to Isla Una, I've learned that one Sizzling Bulalo to share is not enough. We will gladly forego all the other dishes and have one full order each.

*Food-Stars Side Note: Isla Una's dishes goes well with rice so I suggest you order yours with it.
