#FoodStarsAtUptownMall: Cowboy Grub at Texas Roadhouse, Uptown Mall, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, Philippines

My feed has been filling up with alerts from the newly opened Texas Roadhouse in Uptown Mall. As luck would have it, we were invited to a birthday celebration on the week of its opening.

Due to its soft opening, phone lines were either down or no one was answering hence we were forced to go without a reservation.  Wisely used the time taking pictures while we waited to be seated.

To keep us from losing our cool ('coz they were really making us wait a long time), they began serving their complementary wares.

.... and I must say, they should've served this earlier. These freshly baked bread rolls with cinnamon butter is enough to cool off any hot heads in sight. I couldn't stop raving about this and our dinner was yet to start.  Food-Stars Tip: Ask for a butter knife for spreading the butter since they don't serve it with one. Here's a little incident that happened to us. One of the managers who apparently didn't want to go back to the kitchen & get one told us to use the ones on the table instead. When we unwrapped the napkins, the knife he was talking about was bigger than the rolls 'coz it was a steak knife. I would've understood if that was the same case for everyone but our other table got a butter knife. Tsk tsk. Tamad 101. I just asked for one from a server instead.

Finally, we were led to our table. Looking around, you'll notice the wooden panels running all throughout the restaurant with a few cowboy knick knacks on display. What had me scratching my head were the basketball themed decor, they just didn't make sense.

Crispy Chicken Salad Regular (Php 495 )
Dinner started with something healthy. This was supposed to be hot & crispy strips of chicken all over a bed of cold greens with chopped egg, diced tomatoes, bacon & freshly shredded jack and cheddar cheeses . Food-Stars Verdict? There weren't strips but more of chunks of NOT hot chicken. Plating needed work; instead of having a salad that looked clean & fresh, this was a plate of mess. It also lacked any flavor either from the chicken or the greens and that's with a lot of zesty Ceasar dressing.

Next up were the Texas-Sized Platters which Texas Roadhouse promised could serve up to 4 or more people. To accommodate everyone's taste, Leslie ordered a different set per table. The two other dishes you see on top are their Fall-Off-The-Bone-Ribs which I'll be getting into in a bit.

Pork Chops, Beef Steak Tips & Shrimp Texas-Sized Platters (Php 1295)
This was the other table's platter choice.  That's two pieces of bone-in pork chops, grilled beef strips atop a mountain of mashed potatoes and two skewers of grilled shrimps with lemon butter sauce resting on a cup of rice.

Oven Roasted Chicken, Beef Steak Tips & Ribs (Php 1495)
Among the three meats on the platter, I got to say that the Beef Steak Tips were a surprise. Tasty & juicy, they served the tips medium well. The gravy plus the mashed potatoes worked well with the beef. The oven roasted chicken wasn't bad either. Food-Stars Verdict? Not bad.

Award Winning Ribs Full Slab (Php 995)
Expectations for their ribs were quite high 'coz you can't talk about Texas without talking about ribs. From the looks & smell of it, this was going to be some good eating. Food-Stars Verdict? Sticky good grub. The ribs easily falls off the bone and the barbecue sauce was just right. The highlight of the meal was the Loaded Sweet Potato (add Php 60). Yup, it's that orange thing on the upper left of the plate. You might think that sweet potatoes, marshmallows & caramel would not work but it did. It's a taste combination that's sweet yet not cloying. The marshmallow's fluffy texture worked well with the earthy flavors of the sweet potato.

This also came to our table. While the chicken tenders were just okay; the pork chops fared better.

After that heavy meal, the birthday boy decided to ride the bull outside the restaurant. A fitting end to a nice dinner.

Are we coming back? To be honest, my favorite for the night were the complimentary rolls and the Beef Tips; everything else were just okay, nothing actually stood out. Add to the fact that there were still a lot of kinks maybe due to the fact that it still in their early days; a safe answer to that question would be not any time soon.
