The Final & Last Time I'll Ever Go To World Topps, Valero

Craving for Satay Chicken and Beef Salpicao, we decided to visit the World Topps branch located at Valero Plaza Makati. We were regulars at their Timog branch before it closed down.  We were expecting to have fun and just enjoy the evening out but alas, this became one of the WORST dining experiences ever. I'm finding it hard to rate this restaurant objectively but I'll try to be fair.

So without further ado...

With their white walls and cream colored couches, the stark difference from their former branch was evident. Whereas our favorite haunt of yesterday were filled with painted walls and mirrors, in Valero the decor seems plain and dull, almost non-existent. We should've taken this as a sign or an omen of bad things to come.

The only eye-catching design was on one of the walls, a landscape painting of some sort. With the yellow-bulb spotlights and bar tables, at least this part of the restaurant was "breathing life" amidst the white-washed walls.

To demonstrate their fusion food, they had a World of Benetton-esque wall decor. Each person encompassed a different nationality much like what their menu offers.

For appetizers, we ordered their Cheese Sticks. Crunchy and you can taste the cheese with every bite, at least they weren't stingy with it. Serving is for 2-3 people.

We also had their Chap Chae Noodles and as our server explained, its noodles were made from sweet potatoes. Hmmm... I don't think so. It's just a normal Sotanghon dish you can order in any Chinese restaurant. The difference was the sauce, it was kinda sweet on the tongue. Verdict? So-so.

Since this was reason why we went here (the Chicken Stay was taken out of their menu), we ordered our tried-and-tested fav food, Beef Salpicao. The beef was cut into bite-sized chunks and was soft & easy to chew.  Garlic bits & garlic chips were sprinkled on top. The rice that comes with it was almost one cup, much more than what other restaurants would serve you. For a rice topping, this was actually quite filling. We did asked for it to be spicy but no luck.

I read somewhere that their Sisig Rice was good too so I wanted to check out for myself. Bad choice! Once the dish came out, it looked appetizing, it smelled appetizing, as for the taste.... the very few pork bits that were there was too tough to chew and almost burnt. They compensated the lack of pork with lots & lots of vegetables. The white sauce did nothing to add to the flavor of the dish. A big thumbs down to this one.

For dessert, we had the Turon Ala Mode & Mango Crumble. Almost the same presentation, the difference was the first had turon while the latter had mangoes. Unexciting at best, I expected it to be more than just ordinary ice cream, graham and fruits but again, World Topps, Valero failed with these 2 dishes.

And for the first time ever here on Food Stars, I am not giving any star rating for this restaurant.
