Black & White at Romulo Cafe, Jupiter Street Makati

For our weekly Saturday dinner out, it was decided that we were going to eat at Romulo's Cafe. Honestly, this was our first time to hear of this place. We soon learned that this was already their 2nd branch, the first was located in Quezon City.

Romulo Cafe, Jupiter Street Makati
Because of wrong directions given, we got lost. After asking the guards at one of the restaurants at Jupiter Street, we soon found ourselves in front of a black & white house-like setting with a brightly lit patio and large windows with glass doors.  Hmmm... is this going to be like a homemade sort of food trip? Wasn't actually in a mood for that. So with fingers crossed, we walked thru the threshold...

Pictures, pictures...

And more pictures...
Pretty lights
Couple Couch
You won't mistake Romulo Cafe for an at-home dining experience. With the sky high ceilings, quirky light fixtures and floor to ceiling pictures, elegance & sophistication are the words that come to mind. And did I tell you that's just the first floor?

The black & white pattern continued onto the 2nd floor. Here, they offer couches with pillows and longer tables for bigger parties of people. Roomier and functional, ♥♥♥♥ it.

Couldn't get enough of the swirls and zigzags that I had to take a picture of my table setting. It looked like a piece of art. I was content to look around the decor while waiting for our orders to arrive.

Sinigang na Liempo
Always had liempo grilled or fried, never in soup form. I was intrigued by the twice-cooked cooking style. We asked for the soup to be split into cups for easier eating. Serving was good for 5 people. At first sip, I had a hard time trying to place its taste, it had none of the sour flavor that usual Sinigang soups have. The crunchy liempo was fried first and then boiled in the soup. Okay, mystery solved. Verdict? Nothing special, quite forgettable. Moving on.

Lola Virginia's Chicken Relleno
Never liked relleno in any food, be it poultry or fish. You can just imagine how hesitant I was to try this out. But this dish came highly recommended so with baited breath, I took a bite. The chicken was soft and juicy and the stuffing (ground pork, raisins, chorizo, peas) was definitely not what I expected. The flavors all came together to take your taste buds for a ride. Don't forget to put a lot of sauce, it tends to taste dry without it. Relleno is no longer that scary. :)

Boneless Crispy Pata Binagoongan

This was everyone's favorite. It was crispy and crunchy, the Kkkrunch sound echoed all around the table. This no-bones dish made for easier eating. The sliced tomatoes and bagoong glazed on top added color and flavor to the dish. The eggplant on the side was not half bad either.  Clap clap! Take a bow Romulo Cafe, this is definitely worth coming back for! :)

Pork Belly Humba
Was not really sold on this dish. Appearance-wise, it didn't really make me excited to try it out. Sadly, it tasted the same as it looked. The sauce was limp and was a bit bland. The saba and peanuts did not work for me as well. The only good thing about this was that the pork was soft and easy to cut. Yawn.

Tito Greg's Kare-Kare
I ♥ Kare Kare, ask anyone. The sticky gooey orange sauce over rice... YUM! Romulo's take on this dish? Average. It had none of the peanut taste that makes me gaga for this dish. Serving is good for 2-3 people. Overall, it was good... but not great.

Laing with Adobo Flakes

Was expecting something different, especially with a restaurant this fancy. The big pieces of sili came as a surprise but other than that... ordinary. Pass.

Flying Tilapia
This seemed to be how fried fishes are served nowadays, butterflied with it's sides exposed. Almost all restaurants offer variants of this dish, Romulo Cafe was no different. Major gripe was that the fish was too thin & smaller than expected. The 3 sauce offering was a great idea (chili-garlic, honey-bagoong & soy vinegar), you get to pick & choose your favorite. Verdict? Tres' version is way better.

Pancit Puti
A Filipino dish with a touch a class... at least that was what they were trying to offer. Instead of the usual stir-fry, they use olive oil and placed on top the shrimps, chicken, green onions, garlic chips and sliced hard boiled eggs. They leave you with the task of mixing them all in. Honestly, this looked like palabok to me. Didn't try it out since it looked a bit dry for my taste.

Cool As Cucumber
Looked refreshing, minty and cool. Maybe we'll have it next time.

Suman sa Latik
We just had to have something sweet, Suman sa Latik seemed to fit the bill. Served in a shot glass filled 1/4 with latik ( which tasted like coco jam), sliced fried suman, toothpick and a banana leaf. This is actually a simple dessert to make but the aesthetics alone was too cute to pass up. FS Suggestion? Make the suman bigger (it's too small to be appreciated) and serve with a spoon for easier latik eating.

Overall, we loved the place more than the food. Great place with somewhat okay dishes for a higher price tag. So if you're someone who values ambiance above all else, this is the place for you.

Will we come back? Yes, but will be ordering the Boneless Crispy Pata only, nothing else.
