Dimsum Feast at Summer Palace, Edsa Shangrila Manila, Philippines

Brunch with Hubby's side of the family means waking up for a bit of dimsum... but their version of "a bit" is quite different. You'll get what I mean in a minute.

We mostly get our dimsum fix from Summer Palace, Edsa ShangrilaFor this particular Sunday, our brunch party included Auntie Shirley, Sonny, Ryan & Sherm.

We arrived at around 10am just in time for their dimsum cart to make its rounds.

Radish Cake (Php 180)
To start us off, we got 2 orders of the Radish Cake; mother-in-law's favorite dimsum treat. This was actually a substitute to their cubed radish cake with XO sauce (which seems to be off the menu), a poor one at that. I like my radish cake to be crunchy on the outside & soft on the inside. Food-Stars Verdict? I hope they bring back the one with the XO sauce.

The Pork Siomai (Php 210) makes its appearance! This was served fresh from the cart hence the steam. Food-Stars Verdict? Yummy pa din, although the size of the shrimps were disappointing.

Hakaw (Php 220)
Our next dimsum choice for the day was Hakaw or as Summer Palace makes it, HUGE ass fresh shrimps wrapped in thin wanton wrapper & steamed 'til orange. Food-Stars Verdict? Still the star of their dimsum cart :p

Prawn Cheongfun (Php 280)
Hubby's dimsum favorite! Whole shrimps rolled in rice wrapper with stalks of asparagus & spoonfuls of XO sauce on top is always a sight to behold. Food-Stars Recommendation? Ask for more cheongfun sauce.

Machang (Php 180)
Glutinous Rice wrapped in leaves, a Chinese staple. What makes Summer Palace's version different is the fact that they don't directly place the rice on the leaves but instead places a piece of thin paper to separate the rice. Simply put, this is the reason why their Machang have no leafy aftertaste.

Spareribs (Php 190)
Food-Stars Verdict? Not bad although the spareribs were on the fatty side.

Chicken Feet (Php 165)
A Chinese delicacy that I'm sure is not on everyone's dimsum list but is in mine. True, it takes a lot of work to get to the meat because of the bones but the sauce that comes with it makes it all worth it.

By 11am, their kitchen is now open to serve. We got 2 dishes from their Ala Carte menu.

Sweet & Sour Pork Medium (Php 810)
We were promised crunchy & juicy cuts of pork coated with their perfectly balanced sweet & sour sauce. What came out was this plate of tasty pork but no crunch in sight. Sigh. Food-Stars Verdict? Almost but not quite. You've done better than this Summer Palace. I hope you get back to that.

Soft Shell Crabs (Php 760)
This is crab coated & deep fried 'til crunchy then mixed with pork floss. Dip this in vinegar & you're good to go. Food-Stars Verdict? Yummy but there were more extenders than crabs.

Barbecue Pork Pastry (Php 190)
We ended the meal with something sweet. This is flaky pastry with barbecued pork filling. Food-Stars Verdict? This got a thumbs up all around.

We also had a pot of their lovely Chrysanthemum Tea.

A little recap of what we had that morning:
1 Chicken Feet, 4 Hakaw, 2 Machang, 4 Pork Siomai, 2 Radish Cake, 2 Prawn Cheongfan, 1 Spareribs, 1 Pork Pastry & the 2 Ala carte dishes.

Yes, that's how "a bit of dimsum for brunch" looks like for 8 people. You can just imagine how full we all were after all that.
