It's another Sunday dinner out with Hubby's family. This time, we were going to try out the newly opened restaurant of Choi Garden in Greenbelt. Welcome to The Eight by Choi.
With high back chairs and bishop hat-shaped table napkins, its going to be a night of fine dining. And for that special occasion, you can request their red-on-red table setting as pictured above.
For tonight, reservations were made for a private room.
Here's what we had for dinner.
Instead of the usual peanuts for appetizer, they served this.
Doesn't this remind you of the Filipino Lechon Kawali? In Chinese restaurants, they call this Lechon Macau and serve it with a side of spicy yellow mustard. The 8 by Choi's version was not bad; with its crunchy skin and tender & juicy meat. Definitely a nice start to our meal. ;)
XO Radish Cake Large (Php 900) |
A must-try, the cubed radish is really soft & squishy on the inside, just the way I like it. The chopped veggies & slivers of meat made it a complete meal.
I've got to be honest with you, I was too scared to try this out. It may be because it looked too healthy for my liking... but it might actually be that it didn't look that appealing. ;x
Polonchay Tofu with Abalone Sauce (Php 120/pc) |
This on the other hand was another favorite. I was quite surprised to find myself liking this dish.. very much. The soft tofu with the veggie crust on top with the tasty abalone sauce was a winner ;)
Efu Noodles Abalone Sauce Large (Php 700) |
Noodles were firm and well-coated with the abalone sauce. A nice alternative to fried rice.
Peking Duck Whole (Php 1800) |
Here's how a Peking duck looks like before getting carved. We ordered it to be served 2-way. First way is the crispy duck skin & meat sliced thin and placed one by one on the plate. You take a piece then wrap it in spring pancakes. Food-Stars Verdict? The Peking duck was cooked perfectly. The meat was soft & juicy while the skin was crispy & melts-in-your-mouth as you chew. Loved that it didn't have that rubbery texture (sign of overcooking). Thumbs up The Eight by Choi! ;9
Ohh... and this comes with crunchy "chips" which I'm always on the lookout for. ;)

Here's our 2nd way. Minced Peking duck flavored with sauce & sauteed with carrots, greens & sesame seeds. This time around, you wrap it in fresh crisp lettuce leaves & drizzle it with hoisin sauce. A bit messy to eat but definitely worth it.
Instead of the usual steamed ones, we had our Lapu Lapu fried. Here they serve it with mango slivers. Food-Stars Verdict? Sadly, the orange sauce that comes with this tastes similar to Jufran.
You can't go wrong with Yang Chow Fried Rice & The Eight by Choi reinforces that idea. This is tasty with generous amounts of shrimps, eggs & veggies; making it a meal by itself. Personally what sold this for me is the fact that it didn't have that "vetsin" taste & had no green peas ;)
Overall, this somewhat new "addition" to the Choi Garden franchise gets a nod from our book. Will definitely be back for more! ;9
