As the hullabaloo of Mother's Day died down, it's time for FS Mother's Day Good Eats. First up is our celebration with the M-I-L (that's short for mom-in-law).
In the heart of Makati, we found this quaint little European fusion restaurant.
Brasserie Boheme by the Gustavian, Salcedo Village Makati |
The place was a bit small since it was located inside a lobby of The Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences (like a condo-tel). Had to wait for a few minutes to be escorted to our seats.
Racks of Wine |
One of their main decors was this ceiling to floor wine selection.
Ceiling decor |
I've always wondered why people tend to decorate the ceilings. It's too high for anyone to appreciate anyway.
Booth |
Regular table & chairs |
The booth looked a bit cramp so we decided to sit on a regular table setting. The mirrors on the side helped to make the place look roomier.
Menu |
What I liked about this place was they let you make your own 3-course meal from a menu selection. You get 1 soup/ salad, 1 main course (from sea or from land), 1 dessert and tea or coffee.
The two men at the table (hubby & FIL) chose soup for their starters (naturally!) while MIL & I opted for salad.
Mushroom Taragon Soup |
Soups were served in bowls like this. They made sure that the portion was for one person only. :P With chunks of croutons on top and freshly grounded pepper, Hubby started digging in. The tarragon was something new to the palate. The mushrooms were fresh. Hubby's verdict? The flavor was a bit strong for his liking.
No picture but FIL chose the Clam Chowder.

Lady Colonel Salad |
From their Light & Right Menu, MIL had their only vinaigrette salad. Even with our caution that the dressing would be mostly vinegar, she still wanted to try it out. What came out was this plateful of lettuce, tomatoes, peas, cucumber and a drizzle of dressing. From the looks alone, it was too dry but MIL managed to finish it.... after quite some time. She should've gone with this next dish instead.

Bohemian Tower Salad |
It was a good thing Hubby suggested that I go with this one. Aside from the cutesy presentation, this was actually filling. The layer upon layer of nacho chips with chopped cucumber, corn, bits of bacon, carrots & lettuce made me full even before the main course. The dressing though was nothing special, just your normal thousand island. FS Suggestion? Ask for lots of freshly grounded pepper.
With plates empty, we couldn't wait for the main course. We got 2 From the Land (meat selection) & 2 From the Sea (seafood selection). It took quite awhile for food to be served because of the 30 mins wait for the Paella.
Coq Au Vin with Roasted Veg Tambale & Steamed White Rice |
We all suggested that she have the salmon but MIL was in the mood for chicken. First impression? It didn't look appetizing but hey, looks can be deceiving. Surprisingly, the chicken was soft and juicy. Also, for a single serving this was good for 2 people. So props for the taste, boo to the presentation.
Beef Tenderloin in Madagascar Pepper Sauce |
This was really yummy. I had it medium well and the meat was cooked perfectly, brown on the outside but pinkish on the inside. The beef slides off the knife with every slice. The potato wedges on the side completed the meal. Double thumbs up for this one.
Grilled Salmon with White Wine Sauce, Baked Beans & Roasted Veg Timbale |
The name was quite a mouthful. Everyone at the table was in love with this one. The delicate salmon was soft & fresh, every bite was yum. The white wine sauce was a perfect complement to the fish. The baked beans though were not something I was looking forward to trying out. FS Suggestion? Don't forget to squeeze the lemon. It definitely brings out the flavors of the dish.
Bohemian Paella (Salmon, Cream Dory, Clam, Mussels, Shrimp & Black Olives) |
This was what the 30 minutes wait was for and when it came out, I went.... Meh. Didn't look particularly appetizing. Plus the serving size was not even enough for one. Tsk tsk. I was expecting so much more from this dish. Sadly, Brasserie Boheme you disappoint. There was none of the salmon nor the dory as advertised. Hay...
Moving on to desserts.
Chocolate Symphony Terrine |
It was not as sweet as it looked. This was actually more of a sponge cake with dark chocolate drizzled on top. In comparison to our other dessert choice (see below), this was much bigger. Verdict? Ho-hum. Nothing special really.
I was more excited with the other cake.
? |
The server apologized as he placed this on our table. We had 2 of this and both of them looked like this. Presentation? A big fat F. It looked melted; it didn't resembled anything close to a cheesecake. But after much fixing from FIL...
Cheesecake with Mango Gelee |
Ta-dah! At least now it vaguely resembled a cake. I know, it doesn't give off a vibe of yum but surprisingly, this was actually good. It tasted much like Conti's Mango Bravo, with the mango jelly & graham crust. A not-so-bad end to a Mother's Day lunch.
