We were expecting to have a fun and exciting birthday celebration... but guess what, we didn't.
Let me welcome you to one of our worst dinners ever!
Situated in Greenbelt 5, I was expecting a stellar service... or a good service at least. Tsk tsk. Seems like I set my standards too high.
First complaint: When we arrived, it was jam-packed but we weren't worried. We made reservations a week before and we even re-confirmed it the same night. We arrived 10 mins before our reservation (7pm) and guess what... they gave our table away! Because, and I quote "Nagdagsaan ang mga tao kaya nabigay ko". Seriously? No apology whatsoever.
Attention John & Yoko, your customer service SUCKS!
They left us standing there for 15 mins before they offered to rearrange the tables for us. One of their servers, (named TOKYO) was giving us an attitude. Instead of being helpful and courteous, she was rude and unapologetic. We weren't asking for special treatment, just what we reserved for. Nice staff training, real nice!
This was going to be a long night.
It was kinda dark inside and really HOT! Here comes my 2nd complaint of the night: The a/c did not give enough ventilation. Everyone on our table was getting sweaty & hungry. Oh and we had to change table 3 times.
As early as now, I'm giving the service a rating of triple thumbs down (that's one for each table change!)
I was hoping their food would fair better....
Cosmopolitan Japanese = Japanese cuisine tweaked for the modern Filipino palate. Did it work? Was John & Yoko able to accomplish that?

Hmmmm....
Oyster Overload |
Nabeyaki Udon |
The only fun thing about this dish? It's name. Try saying it 5 times fast! But honestly, didn't get to try this one out. Was not in the mood to eat something hot when I'm already in a bad mood. Didn't look inviting enough to warrant any reaction from me. Sad, right?
Japaella |
This Japanese paella was the only dish I enjoyed. Served in a small black frying pan, appearance-wise this looked appetizing. With the big prawns and sliced chicken teriyaki, this was a complete meal in itself. Ate like 3 bowls of this. The rice was sweet. The green peas were soft that it was unnoticeable and the chicken was cooked okay. The prawns though were a bit overcooked, had a hard time peeling the skin.
There Goes My Diet! |
This wasn't our first choice from the Nation of Blowouts Menu but the server (yes, it was TOKYO) informed us that all their beef was out of stock. But the funny thing? Beef Yakitori was available. Does this mean that it's not real beef? Curious.
The There Goes My Diet consists of the following (clockwise from upper left), Dynamite Roll & Tuna Sashimi, Bacon Enoki, Chicken Teriyaki, Gyoza, Beef Yakitori, Assorted Tempura and All Meat Fried Rice (in the middle).
I'll be reviewing this one by one, starting with the sushi. The Dynamite Roll (aka California Maki) and Tuna Sashimi were just okay, nothing special really. At least they were fresh... I think. It was my first time to try Bacon Enoki, and based on John & Yoko's execution of it, will not be trying it again soon.
There was also nothing special with the Tempura. It was just your standard breaded shrimps. The Chicken Teriyaki here was exactly the same with the ones on the Japaella. A bit cold though. Don't expect much from the Gyoza, this was kinda standard too. The Beef Yakitori was a thumbs down. The meat was really tough and hard. As for the Rice, was not able to taste any meat in it, better change the name it's kinda misleading. Tsk tsk.
These were all set on a big flat square plate. According to the menu, this was good for 4 people. Well after eating, all 4 people were disappointed.
We also ordered the Salmon Wasabi Cream. The salmon was soft and the serving was good for 2 people. Surprisingly, this was a good dish. The creamy sauce though lacked flavor.

Complaint #3: We availed of the voucher promo but guess what? They charged us for the whole meal. Thus, they had to void the transaction pa. Yup, that's how bad the staff is. And get this, they still charged the SC on our bill. Tsk tsk. It's clearly stated on the voucher that VAT & service charge is inclusive already.
In conclusion, with your sucky service, unorganized staff and novice managers, I won't be coming back here again. Even with the vouchers.
** Was actually hesitant about this restaurant due to the numerous negative reviews about its service. But wanted to try it our for ourselves. Wrong move. It's been 3 years and it seems like all the reviews are still right. **
Our food blog is not all about how the food tastes, this is about our complete dining experience. Thus, the service they offer, how the staff treats its guests and how the restaurant looks are part & parcel of that experience.
Sadly, John & Yoko was a huge disappointment in all aspects.
Food Stars recommendation? As long as they don't improve their management, staff and cooks, STAY AWAY... FAR FAR AWAY...
